So, you have learned the basics of information security and you want to develop or practice your current skills! You’ve come to the right post because today I will show you some platforms that can help you get started with practicing your hacking skills legally! This will help you be more comfortable and more confident about your hacking skills.

# HackTheBox

  • If you are really into the cybersecurity community you have most likely heard of Hack the Box (HTB). It’s one of if not the greatest platform to hack legally! They basically provide vulnerable machines that are in an internal network which you can access by connecting to their VPN (using OVPN). You have to scan the machine for vulnerabilities and if you find any, try to exploit them! After exploiting the machine(s) you have to find a flag (a string of numbers and letters) which you’ll have to provide on their website in order for them to verify you have successfully hacked into their machine(s) [this is called a CTF — CaptureTheFlag], sound pretty fun doesn’t it? Also, what I like about HTB is that they gamify the whole thing! You have leaderboards, “wars” etc. The platform provides both Free and Paid memberships , check their website for more information :

# TryHackMe

  • Try Hack Me is pretty similar to HTB , meaning that it still follows that CTF system! They are indeed different in terms of leaderships etc. but they do share the same idea, provide vulnerable machines to hackers and let them capture the flag by exploiting those vulnerabilites! TryHackMe also provides a Free and Paid membership.

# IMPORTANT POINT

  • If you are more of a blue teamer then what I personally recommend is Try Hack Me because they also focus on the blue team side of things. If you are a red teamer both platforms are great, you can check out content creators to see which one fits you the best!
